Stephen is one of the most impressive and best human beings I’ve known in my life. I know that I, and other Democratic leaders from around the State, are excited to do everything we can to help him win and flip this seat from Red to Blue.”

He grew up in Columbia, where he attended Grant and Ridgeway Elementary Schools, graduated from Hickman High School (2001) and from the University of Missouri School of Law.  After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, Stephen answered the call to serve our country as a U.S. Marine for two tours in Iraq, where he led troops in combat. When he returned home, he had the honor to serve Columbia in the Missouri House of Representative for 8 years from 2009-2016. He also served as Chair of the Missouri Democratic Party (2017-2018), where he successfully ensured the passage of statewide ballot initiatives to raise the minimum wage, enact campaign finance reforms and defeat so-called right-to-work. Stephen’s tenure as Party Chair was also the last time Missouri Democrats flipped a State Senate Seat and the last time Democrats won a Statewide election.
